If you or your team are planning on entering a cricket Super 8s competition, it is best to familiarize yourself with the rules. Super 8’s is a cricket format designed for beginners or teams looking for more experience. Players bat in pairs for a specified number of overs and lose runs, when losing a wicket. Unlike the 11 a side format, batters do not leave the field of play but lose a number of runs and swap ends. It is a great way to develop players skills and encourage new players to the game of cricket.

The following rules apply for women’s Super 8s and can be adopted for youth and men’s cricket too. However, the size of cricket ball will differ from that stated below. Be aware though, there may be specific local rules which apply to your own league or competition.

With women’s cricket, it is generally played with less confrontation so could be a good way to introduce trainee umpires to the game.

How Many Players Are Required For A Team In Super 8s?

Most women’s Super 8s leagues are played at the weekend. As such, the rules suggest 3 teams play at the same venue on a specified match day. The 3 teams will play each other once, on that day. 8 players are required for a Super 8s game although the minimum is actually 7 players. Should a team only have 7 players, one player will bat twice (This player is selected by the opposition prior to the start of the game). When batting, each team starts with a score of 200. Should they lose a wicket, 5 runs are taken off the total score. On losing a wicket, other batter faces next ball, even if end of an over. For example, should a player lose their wicket, the players would swap ends if there are further balls in the over. If a wicket falls on the last ball of the over, players remain at the same end and the other batter faces the next ball from the new bowler.

It is true the laws of cricket apply in all women’s cricket Super 8s matches, although there is no LBW. This is to encourage players to develop and not overcomplicate, what is a development game. Having said that if the player kicks the ball away or the action is deemed to be deliberate by umpires, then LBW may still apply. Prior to the game, a quick chat between umpires and captains can eradicate any potential issues later in the game.

How Many Overs Can A Bowler Bowl In Cricket Super 8s?

Bowlers may bowl a maximum of ¼ of total overs (For full game, a bowler can bowl a maximum of 4 overs). Not all players will need to bowl as you can have 4 bowlers bowl 4 overs each. A maximum of 2 bounces are allowed, prior to the delivery reaching the batter – if more, its a no-ball. One bouncer (over shoulder height) limit per over. More than one results in a no-ball. Any passing over head height, will be called a no-ball. Any full tosses above the batters waist height, will be called a no-ball. What Is A Free Hit In Super 8s Cricket?

Free hits are awarded when a bowler bowls a no-ball or a full toss above waist height. In overs 1 to 15, 2 extra runs are awarded and the subsequent ball will be a free hit. A free hit means the only way a batter can lose a wicket is by run out. The field can only be changed for a free hit, if there has been a change of the batter facing the next ball.

How Long Does A Cricket Super 8s Game Last?

Each 16 over innings should last no more than 1 hour. 10 minutes extra can be allowed should it be required. There is usually a 10 minute interval between innings and this is agreed by consent with the umpires and captains, prior to the start of any game. Restricting the game to a timed period, helps move the game along, especially if there are 3 matches taking place across the day, at the same venue.

Are Ther Rain Rules In Super 8s Cricket?

Should the game be rain affected, a minimum requirement will be 4 overs per team. Both sides need to bat for the same period of overs so could be 8 and 8 or 12 and 12 etc. There are rain rules that dictate potential length of games however, should the 2nd innings face less overs than the first, then the match should be classified as abandoned. Subsequent games may need to have the length of match reduced should the previous games be delayed by rain. The length of game shall be determined by the umpires prior to the start of the game.
