Is The Rhino Cyclone Rugby Ball As Good As A Gilbert Rugby Ball?

Rhino manufacture rugby balls for both codes of the game, Union and League, however the Rhino Cyclone rugby ball is specifically for Rugby Union. If you have heard of rugby then you will know the Gilbert brand as they appear in almost every league of cup competition around the world. A less well known brand is Rhino but the quality of the Rhino balls sit alongside those of Gilbert and are highly regarded by clubs that use them. If you can look beyond Gilbert as an alternative brand then Rhino is a great alternative. There tend to be 3 reasons to buy a ball – quality of grip, aesthetics (visually appealing) and price. It can be argued that the Rhino Cyclone ball beats 2 out of the 3 when compared to Gilbert balls.

What Type Of Grip Does The Rhino Cyclone Have?

The grip on a rugby ball can vary depending on the model within the chosen brand. In the Rhino range, there are at least 3 different types of grips used. The Rhino Cyclone use the ‘3D Grip’ configuration, which is more pronounced than some other types of grip. This grip is a pimple grip with a rounded peak and performs very well in both wet and dry conditions. There are a number of different size pimples which make this different from other balls and help it perform very well all year round. The grip tends to last longer than a standard grip, ensuring the balls can be used over a longer period, giving the user better value for money. Some people say the grip can be harsh when the ball is new and might be a problem with young players. From our own experience this is not the case and as the grip is different from most other balls, it tends to be the only comment made by people looking to be negative (as it isn’t a Gilbert ball).
