How to apply a batting grip with a sandwich bag
How to apply a batting grip? A few years ago I was playing cricket for my local team when one of my team mates asked if anyone had a batting cone. (Also known as a cricket bat replacement rubber grip cone). Luckily for this player they did, as his grip was in a terrible state. However, it was a real struggle to get the batting grip onto the cone. Whilst trying to get the grip rolled to the shoulder of the blade without getting creases in the grip, was also a challenge.

This got me thinking there must be an easier method. One that doesn’t require the power grip of a weightlifter. I later sourced and purchased a Vacuum Applicator and thought i had solved the problem. Insert the grip into the tube. Both ends of the grip roll over to create a seal and then the applicator is pumped, which removes the air and creates a vacuum between the grip and applicator. This then allows you to insert the bat handle into the applicator, release both ends of the grip and job done. The only issue is batting grips have small pin sized holes in them, so creating a vacuum seemed almost impossible.
It appears that Gunn & Moore may have discontinued the vacuum applicator so maybe they realised it no longer worked with the current grips.

Can You Really Apply A Batting Grip With A Sandwich Bag?
Years later, I saw a video which suggested you could apply a batting grip easily, using a bag. The bag they used was a standard shopping bag. One issue with this was the amount of bag you had to thread through the inside of the grip. I thought of a solution and came up with the idea of using a sandwich bag. This is smaller in volume, but long enough to reach the end of the grip, allowing you to pull down over the cricket bat handle. The result of this was my video on how to apply a batting grip with a sandwich bag.
The short answer is yes. It is a lot easier on your fingers than using a batting cone too. I have had hundreds of comments and emails from players, thanking me for the idea an dproving that it can be done. Honestly, the video was shot in real time and proves a grip can be applied in less than 4 minutes – using the sandwich bag method. Don’t believe me – Give it a go and when you do it, please leave a comment with your thoughts.

This video has now been viewed over 265,000 times and almost 82% of watchers have approved or liked the video. Ray Dibben asked, how can you apply a 2nd batting grip using this method. I had a think and came up with another simple solution.
Can You Apply A 2nd Batting Grip Without A Batting Cone?
Again the answer is yes and by far the easiest method is with the sandwich bag method. Again this video has proven popular with in excess of 27,000 views and over 90% approval. Not every player likes to add a 2nd grip so I knew the video would get less views. Ray was so pleased to get his answer though and here is the video showing how to do it in under 6 minutes. It does take longer as there are a couple of extra stages to the process. Again, give it a go if the 2nd grip is your thing, leave a comment if the video helps. Good luck.
